Interesting back story on the writer, I wasn't aware of it. It's certainly consistent with your thesis.

J.F. Lawton modeled Vivian's character on his life partner of eight years, who actually suffered through similar humiliating Beverly Hills experiences when they were in the depths of poverty (she supported him for a time). It was her Iowan determination and idealism that influenced them to develop a script about the evolution of a female character whose self-esteem responds positively to an improved environment. Too bad Lawton never gave his partner due credit for her work -- yet continues to use her as a model for scripts (consider the other Cinderella-ish characters he creates, V.I.P. among them). As far as Long Beach goes, he attended CSULB for five years.
