Edith Jones for Sandra O'Connor

Apparently O'Connor has announced her retirement.

Her replacement has to be Edith Jones.  As I have said, she's the best pick, period.  Given the gender issue, she's the hands-down logical choice for an O'Connor vacancy.

The overall improvement on the Court would be immense.  Among other things, a Justice Jones would provide real business expertise on a Court sadly lacking in that area.

I recognize that this isn't Bush's easiest pick.  But after seeing the damage mediocrities like Souter can do, the fight would be worth it.

Update:  This WaPo list of possible successors, probably compiled in anticipation of a Rehnquist retirement, lists no women.  I'm not suggesting Bush has to nominate a woman now, but that the gender issue makes it possible for him to propose somebody who might not otherwise fly.  With all the speculation focusing on Rehnquist, I suspect the MSM has been caught offguard (a good opportunity for the blogosphere).  So all bets, like the WaPo list, may be off.

Further update:  More here.
