The limits of Google's social responsibility
Google will censor search results in order to operate in China. Apparently there’s a limit to its “Don't Be Evil" – it extends to US government intrusions, but not all the way to jeopardizing access to a 100 million Internet users. This supports my judgment that Google is, as it should be, pursuing a business strategy, balancing costs and benefits.
Google hopes to compromise by notifying users when results are censored. It’s not clear whether that will satisfy China.
By the way – what kinds of sites does China censor? Well, according to my information last month, this one, for example.
