Salim Ahmed Hamdan was sentenced to 66 months for giving material assistance to terrorism as Osama bin Laden’s driver. With time served his sentence will be over in 5 months.
The Times story talks about the “warm” relationship Hamdan developed with the military judge, who said “I hope the day comes that you are able to return to your wife and daughters and your country.” The unexpectedly short sentence was hailed as justice despite a flawed system.
Meanwhile Jamie Olis, the former senior director of tax planning for Dynergy (not nearly as exciting as being bin Laden’s driver, I would guess) got 24 1/3 years for giving material assistance to what was later determined to be fraudulent tax planning. As I reported at the time,
If he's lucky and behaves he will only have to serve 21 years. Then he can introduce himself to his daughter, now 6 months old. Mr. Olis will only be 60 years old or so when and if he gets out.
Olis was later resentenced to a six year term – still six months longer than Hamdan. He’ll be out in about nine months to be reunited with his family. No warm words from his judge, as far as I know. Here's a recap from Tom Kirkendall.
